Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have become an essential requirement for life in modern societies, and the understanding thereof: Computer networks are superseded by “the internet of things”, as ICT units are implemented in more and more everyday commodities, often operating below the level of user perception while restructuring patterns of human interaction. At the same time, ICTs have become the interface between other technological developments, and the key to reorganising work environments.
The unit’s research addresses the possibilities of a socially participatory and both economically and ecologically sustainable development and use of ICTs. It includes inquiries into their structural effects and possible risks as well as into issues of their political and juridical regulation. Research and analysis of those aspects of ICTs go hand in hand with the development of new perspectives towards managing them. An important catalyst for the unit’s work will be its cooperation with the Faculty of Technical Sciences at Klagenfurt University.
